Costa Rica National Museum

Today I had the opportunity to visit the National Museum in downtown San Jose.  I spent a couple of hours there learning about the history of the country and spent most of my time inside the butterfly garden watching all the beautiful butterflies.  I took a lot of pictures of butterflies and not so many in the museum, but you will see them below.
This is the view of the museum, it is an old fort located in the heart of San Jose.
The first section of the tour starts you in a beautiful butterfly garden.  This is where I ended up spending most of my time observing the beautiful butterflies.
These two butterflies are actually the large blue butterflies we see in Costa Rica who have beautiful camouflage to try and hide from predators when they are feeding or stationary.

These are hundreds of caterpillars that have built a cocoon around themselves and are waiting to emerge.

This is a view of the beautiful butterfly garden.  Today it was nice because there were not a lot of people there so I was able to just sit down and let the butterflies fly around me.
This was one of the old jail cells where they held prisoners.  It is hard to see in the photo but there was tons of writing and drawing on the walls.
This building took me through the history of the country from the nomadic hunters and gatherers all the way to the Europeans arriving.  They had lots of primitive tools, pottery, as well as burial techniques.
One of the other exhibits showed some of the gold that has been discovered and how it was used in the society for different people.
This building showed what a "normal" European settlement looks like.
This is a tree that I found in the courtyard that is called the candle tree.  Although you can't see it very well it looks like there is all sorts of yellow candles hanging from the tree.
This is all the supplies needed to harvest sugar cane all the way through producing the blocks of sugar.
 An old sewing machine.
These two pictures show pictures of the clothing that the religious leaders wore.

Will be leaving about 5:30 in the morning to embark on my journey to Monteverde taking the public bus which should be an experience in and of itself!
